Colnago CLX Review

Famous high end Italian road bike manufacturer Colango is world renowned not only for their flair in designing beautiful bikes and frames, but is also famously known to create bikes with outstanding performance and rideability. Their bikes are ridden by professional teams such as Team Europcar which had a stage win in this year’s Tour de France as well as the up and coming ladies professional cycling team Wiggle Honda.

The latest edition of the CLX consists of an attractive new frame which is based on the class leading V1-r road bike, albeit using slightly lower performing carbon fibre to keep production costs low, translating into a cheaper retail price which makes this bike very appealing to the mid level market consumers who demand an affordable price but yet still want an excellent performer right out of the box.

The oversized and oblique shaped tubes form the front monocoque triangle, with the squarish seat and chain stays added to it thereafter around the large bottom bracket area which is utilizing the standard Colnago ThreadFit82.5 system, the exact same bottom bracket that’s also used for the top of the line C60 and V1-r frames. The seat tube is a conical shape that uses the lighter and more comfortable 27.2mm diameter seat post. All cabling is run internally to keep the bike looking clean, with the rear brake cable and housing running through the top tube, instead having just the cable run inside the frame tubes as can be seen on other brands’ frames.

The beefy fork is also a monocoque designed piece that features straight blades and a carbon steerer that is tapered at 1-1/8″ to 1-1/4″, similarly, the carbon dropouts are also of a monocoque design with a replaceable internal derailleur hanger. This bike is outfitted with Shimano’s latest 11 speed Ultegra 6800 groupset, except for the brakes which are Colnago’s very own branded X-brake 1 models, gearing consists of a compact 50/34 crank that’s mated with a 11-25 cassette and gear shifts are made with beautifully made Ultegra 6800 shifters which fits the hands very nicely, the available gear ratios offer you plenty of options, more than what you might actually require for your daily rides. Contact points consist of a Deda RHM02 aluminum dropbar as well as a very comfy Selle Italia X1 saddle with aluminum rails, the Deda Zero One stem, which is finished in a similar matt black colour, blends nicely together with the matt black and dark grey finish of the frame. The wheels are slightly aero shaped Artemis CX32 models made of aluminum, and wrapped with 23mm wide Continental Grand Sport Race tyres. Offered in eight different frame sizes ranging from a 42cm long seat tube height up to a huge 59cm long one.

The CLX is very reasonably priced, considering that you get a carbon bike with a monocoque design for added stiffness, but yet still provides a lot a compliance to give you a very comfortable ride without being too harsh and racy. This bike could see itself clocking up endless miles with riders that do not want or require a super stiff and high performance framed road bike, but would rather enjoy a more relaxed and easy ride with a bike that is still capable of offering plenty of performance when required.
