Road Discipline Categories
And now we come to the Road Bike categories, which is the discipline of the majority of our voters – 48.23%. And these are their choices.
TOGOPARTS Cyclists Choice Awards 2015: Road Bike Brand
1st Runner up: Pinarello
2nd Runner up: Canyon
Notable mention: Merida
Amercia’s Specialized Bike Components wins this one. The brand’s Tarmac, Venge and Roubaix models have all achieved best-seller status worldwide.
The brand is helmed by Mountain Bike Hall Of Fame’s Mike Sinyard, who created the company 36 years ago out of his love for cycling sport. He started off by importing Cinelli parts into America on credit, but in the late 1990s the company began working with Mario Cipollini, Italy’s top rider at the time. From then on road bikes became one of the company’s key strengths, culminating in the collaboration with Formula One giant McLaren for the design of the Venge road bike.
TOGOPARTS Cyclists Choice Awards 2015: Road Bike Wheelsets
1st Runner up: Fulcrum
2nd Runner up: Enve
Notable mention: Shimano
Zipp Cycle Components, American maker of ultra-expensive and wind-tunnel tested deep section rims and wheelsets, easily takes the crown. Considered the gold standard for performance and light weight, their 404 Firecrest carbon clincher wheelsets are the best-selling of their production designs.
Zipp Cycle Components are also producers of handlebars, cranks and cycle accessories, and are part of the growing SRAM group, not that anyone in Singapore cares.
TOGOPARTS Cyclists Choice Awards 2015: Road Bike Tyres
1st Runner up: Vittoria
2nd Runner up: Schwalbe
Notable mention: Specialized
This is another category in which there is a clear winner – Germany-based Continental crushes the rest of the competition. Their reputation on the road is well-deserved – Continental is the world’s fourth-largest automotive tyre maker – only Michelin figure in this list as makers of automative tyres as well and they did not even placed amongst the top 4 here.
Continental was also the road tyre brand reported by Best Road Range Bike Shop winner as their best-selling tyre brand – in particular, they mentioned the Continental Grand Prix P4000 SII as their best-selling tyre.
TOGOPARTS Cyclists Choice Awards 2015: Road Bike Saddles
1st Runner up: Selle Italia
2nd Runner up: Specialized
Notable mention: Prologo
fi/zi:k won this category, and their road-oriented Arione and Aliante models have been the best-selling in the local market, just as they have done worldwide.
Based in Italy, the company also makes shoes, but their extensive saddle test and research has resulted their performance saddles being more popular. The Arione range features a trademark shape with wing arches that are designed to flex when you put power down, yet long and narrow enough to be comfortable when you tuck into a long draft.
TOGOPARTS Cyclists Choice Awards 2015: Road Bike Pedals
1st Runner up: LOOK
2nd Runner up: Speedplay
Notable mention: Time
Shimano wins the pedals category again with an overwhelming majority of the vote. As with its mountain bike and commuting pedals, there’s a wide variety of road bike pedals encompassing the entire price range to choose from. It would be tempting to report that their most affordable pedals are the best selling, but we don’t have the official sales figures from Shimano. Plus, we all know that pedals are the best place to save weight – hence, many road cyclists may opt to splurge on lighter pedals.
