OCBC Bank and Spectrum Worldwide, title sponsor and organizer respectively of OCBC Cycle Singapore, launched the third OCBC Cycle Singapore Safe Cycling Campaign to 900 Primary three to Primary six school students at Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus Kellock (CHIJ Kellock) yesterday.

During the hour long session, the students were given tips on how to cycle safely by special guests, national cyclist Dinah Chan and OCBC Singapore Pro Cycling Team rider, Timothy Lim. The young students, aged between nine and twelve, were taught on the importance of wearing helmets while cycling, the proper way to wear a cycling helmet, situations in which a cyclist should slow down as well as looking out for vehicles and observing the relevant traffic rules when cycling on the roads.

The students were also given a preview of a safe cycling video produced by blogger and cycling enthusiast, mr brown. The video is part of a five-part series on safe cycling tips that will be shared on YouTube. Check out the first video here:

There were also ‘live’ demonstrations by student volunteers on bicycles and the teachers even joined in to simulate as ‘motorists’ as the student volunteers re-enacted various scenarios cyclists would face while riding on the roads:

The enthusiasm was high amongst the students when Dinah and Timothy conducted a short quiz to recap the key pointers which were taught to them regarding safe cycling.

It is the first time that OCBC Cycle Singapore brought the message of safe cycling to school and we hope that there will be more to come in future!

Indeed, it is never too early to learn how to be safe as a cyclist!
